Frida-Like Journal Page Art
For the last ten years of her life, Frida Kahlo kept a journal in which she recorded her passions, feelings, thoughts, poems, and dreams.
Using inks, watercolors, crayons and other mediums, Frida created colorful and powerful images -- self portraits, sketches, and complete paintings. The journal itself (see note below) is a stunning work of art that is compelling to view.
The book pages are 6" x 9" in size, and I began my Frida-like journal art using a format twice that size, 12" x 18." My intent was not to copy Frida's work, but to get a sense of her intense expressive process, using India and acrylic inks.
In my work, I included symbols or motifs that Frida often used (the sun, spirals, angels) and then incorporated personal images that emerged from my own art-making. Here is a result of this journey.
