Frida! The Journey Spring to Autumn, 2007

As some of you know, I began my "Frida! Journey" in the Spring of 2007, delving into her life and her work with the purpose of creating art and integrated learning activities that merge the Visual Arts, Social Studies and English Language Arts. As I worked, I found that every time I turned a page in one book, I wanted to turn several more in other books because the more I read, the more curious I became with learning about this complex and interesting woman. After watching several videos multiple times, reviewing dozens of books, becoming immersed in Frida’s journal, creating over a dozen large-scale journal pages with inks and washes, completing five Frida look-a-like oil paintings, listening to hours of audio tapes of her life and her letters, and, trying to learn a little Spanish, today I find myself still unfinished with all that I set out to accomplish! But it is a wonderful journey and the process is very exciting!

In the meantime, though, I had the opportunity to present a Frida workshop for ArtCetera, a Young Professional’s group who meet once a month in Akron, Ohio to enjoy the arts. In this workshop, I shared Frida’s life and work while the participants created their own Mexican folk art designs and Frida-like journal pages. If Frida herself had been there, she would have laughed and had a great time!

Here are some photos from this event, as well as some photos of Frida in her studio. Enjoy!
